Explorations in Wood

The studio aimed to introduce wood as a fundamental material. It explored the properties of wood and its techniques of making. The intention of the studio was to make students aware about the wood working processes with reference to design methods. The understanding of natural wood and manufactured wood was carried forward through various hands-on exercises and site visits. The skill of drawing was used as a design studio ability to conceptualize furniture. Students were guided to select a specific commercial function and identify its needs to design a furniture piece. Alternative materials along with wood were used to create joinery to develop a non-rigid assembled furniture. Students used woodworking tools and machines to make prototypes using CEPT workshop facility. A furniture prototype was developed as a result of the design process.
