HVAC Lab

Energy spent on heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) accounts for 30-50% of a building’s energy requirement. The HVAC Lab course introduces the discipline of HVAC within the context of energy efficiency, performance, and sustainability. Engineering concepts of HVAC include the vapor compression cycle and the associated thermodynamicsundefinedinstrumentation. Students understand different types of HVAC systems and their appropriateness for specific applications. Indoor contaminants, filtration theoryundefinedtechniques, and filter types are studied. Ventilation and particulate matter measurements are carried out with dedicated instruments to assess air quality. Students get hands-on experience by measuring airflow, power, and balancing heatundefinedenergy recovery devices. Topics such as fan curvesundefinedlaws, fan selection, and analysis of energy consumption data of HVAC installations are also covered. The simulation module focusses on modelling different HVAC systems and optimizingundefinedexploring lowundefinedhybrid energy cooling systems for reducing energy consumption. Expert sessions cover concepts of commissioning, best practices, thumb rules, and case studies.
