Odhav Talav Settlement-Transformation of an urban fringe

Cities are a melting pot of trade, commerce and culture. They are seen as beacons of opportunity by the millions of Indian migrating to cities each day. For those that make it their own, the city is a haven of economic growth and endless bounty. For those who fail, the city is a nothing more that a corporate entity, waiting to exploit the labor market. No matter what perspective we view it from, cities are centers of economic, political, and cultural interactions. Its where innovation thrives, and lifestyles change. On the other side of the coin, cities are centers for crime, congestion, and pollution. The is also often associated with inequalities, social exclusion, and divide. This studio, was an exercise aimed at understanding these various facets of the city, based on individual analysis of complex urban settings, through evidence gained from field visits, and visual and verbal (through questionnaires', interview) surveys. A 1 square kilometer sample slice of the city of Ahmedabad was taken. We peeled back this 1 sq.km. precinct one layer a week, over a period of 13 weeks. This portfolio is compilation and comprehensive overview those understandings and inferences. It aims to understand the relationship and context and role of this precinct in the city of Ahmedabad.
