FORTWALL AS A TRANSITION

Ahmedabad is known as a fortified city or walled city as it holds its most historic fort wall, parts of which can still be seen at few places. As a part of the conservation of the fort wall of Ahmedabad, many decisions were taken for not removing it, instead to renovate it. The patch between Nehru Bridge and Ellis bridge still has the part of the fort wall as it is the Bhadra Fort area and it is preserved well. But as the fort wall creates two different levels, and there is no connection between the two. Bhadra plaza being the market hub of Ahmedabad has no connection to the river. Therefore, there is a need for a transitional space between Bhadra fort area and the river, catering to different functions, which increases the life around that area. In the growing city development and new upcoming CBD, people need a place to sit, relax, gather, talk, discuss along with work. With the new CBD development on one side of the river edge, with tall structures and high density around, there is a need for open public space. Connecting the dots of the potential sites for small interventions along with the existing activities around the bus terminal, the project aims to create a transitional space that caters to different public activities. PROGRAM- Co-working spaces with ancillary spaces as workshop space, exhibition space, amphitheater, cafes and markets.
