Forest Research Institute, Chandigarh

The studio intends to design a Forest Research Institute that responds to the climatic conditions of Chandigarh. Chandigarh experiences composite climate throughout the year with hot- dry, hot-humid, and cold climate. The design makes use of the courtyard acting as cool air pockets during the hot months and providing warmth during the cold months. Chimneys are provided in certain spaces helping in heat-driven ventilation. The use of ground temperature through earth berming becomes the primary strategy in the building, providing warmth during winters and coolth during summers. The use of secondary roofs and roof gardens helps in reducing heat gain through conduction. High thermal mass is used given the large difference in temperature. The users enter the building and move up towards the institution passing through the public spaces. The accommodation is provided separately, not attached to the institute.
