Taking off from the skills already learnt during the first semester, the long-form writing exercise encourages the students to conduct independent research into designers, architects, planners whose works fall in the time period after the Second World War. With the development of their ability to read styles, technical drawings and understand better the language of design, they are expected to avoid a repetition of expert analysis devoid of meaning or understanding, and focus instead on analysing the works they are interested in with the tools already in hand.
Once again, the multiple drafts allow for an articulation of concerns with working with different kinds of source materials; with the ability to articulate clearly a framework of analysis and to describe the aspects that the writer wishes to focus upon. The essays are also an opportunity to work with the APA manual of style and integrate into one's writing appropriate practices of acknowledging others' work.
