Design of Steel Structures

This studio aims to provide students with knowledge and skills to design steel structures. The course will enable fresh BE students to work individually on given project with thorough understanding of architectural drawings, preparing structural systems using latest Indian Standard Code of Practice for general construction (IS800:2007). Students will gain competency in analytical theories, structural systems and detailing structural drawings with main emphasis on the understanding of the basic behavior of steel structures. The course aims to develop professional competencies in the design and construction of steel members through critical thinking led by discussions and analyses of various practical steel structural design problems. Students will apply their knowledge from strength of materials and structural analysis for further understanding between analysis, selection and design of structural steel elements and their connections. Finally students will prepare detailed structural drawings to execute on site. Students will also learn the use of structural software for structural analysis. The course will be supported by numerous assignments to understand the defined concepts.
