Kolkata water bodies are currently facing the worst possible scenarios. Waterbodies are witnessing sharp increases in pollution and dissapearance due to the rapid urban growth of the population and lack of proper surveillance and water body management. The city had about 5000 water bodies, which has reduced by 46% in the last two decades. As these waterbodies play a vital role in the ecosystem, socio-cultural activities, and livelihood of the urban poor, a strategic management plan for conserving/protecting/rejuvenating these waterbodies is a necessity, which has to be done with the collaboration State Governments and concerned citizens to secure these natural assets.
