Linguistic Research Centre

The Research Centre will primarily lend support to people and communities in preserving and propogating their languages, dialects and oral traditions of folk form. The institute records and  does research on diverse language communities. It also functions as a platform for various kinds of expression.
Design ideals involved came about through processes to understand the site and program better. The idea of vistas from the site interpretation and the idea of things coming together, propogating  from the programmatic interpretation led to the form and function of the built-form, ie, of the planar volumes oriented towards the said vistas.

SITE INTERPRETATION( ABSTRACT-INTERPRETATIVE MODEL & SKETCHES) One of the main aspects of the site that influenced were the various VISTAS present throughout. Hence, to manifest them abstarctly, a model depicting cones of vision of varying degres and of varying heights to show the level of openness.

COLLAGES The collages were meant to show how one may experience the said VISTAS within a spatial volume.

PROGRAMMATIC INTERPRETATION PROCESS The understanding of the program, ie, of the instituional setting, was attempted to be shown with an abstract interpretation. It was interpreted as things coming together, accumulating and getting propogated, that was shown physically througha system of LINES and PLANES. Later, this along with the previous process were combined to obtain the form for planar volumes that look onto the THREADS of VISTAS

LINGUISTIC RESEARCH CENTRE PROJECT Process work involved sketching sections and model making. Various depictions of the planars volumes, corresponding to the VISTAS, were explored.

LINGUISTIC RESEARCH CENTRE CENTRE PROJECT Taking into the learnings made from the processes, PLANAR VOLUMES, each placed by the other, are directed towards the THREaDS OF VISTAS. The VOIDS formed between each of the PLANES are meant to give glimpses of the landscape. The planes themselves have been tied together via two platforms that cut across the planes, climaxing at the end to a fully open view.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN The voids formed between the planes form windows to these vistas, along side the planar volumes too.

FIRST FLOOR AND BASEMENT LIBRARY

SECTIONS While the overall built form perches over the sloping terrain, each of the planar volumes sit on a singular contour.

ELEVATIONS

COMMUNITY CENTRE PROJECT A two week exercise, before start of the main design. Design Ideals behind the project were to burrow into the ground to safeguard against the harsh weather. Taking the barren site into consideration, burrowing underground doesn’t necessarily take away from the experience of the surroundings.
