Cross-programming

This studio will look at cross programming as a condition of our crowded Indian cities and re-insert it into interior space. In current times, when defunct mills are converted into shopping malls and houses into museums, the interchangeability, flexibility as well as fluidity of program demands a critique of the modernist adage ‘form follows function' and an exploration of new relationships between form and function, all the while expanding the idea of function/use into a broader understanding of a program.

The studio will explore, through analysis and design interventions, the spatial and programmatic possibilities where the realms of form and function intersect, interface and overlay. What is a program? And can the idea of cross-programming expand to include design decisions beyond only its function? Based on their design position, the students will demonstrate various conditions through the development of an interior architecture through interior design elements using spatial and formal concepts. Projects will emerge from the student’s individual understanding of this interface.
