Traditional building craft is a major aspect of India’s cultural heritage and history. It reflects the unique cultural and historical identity of various regions of the country and has played an influential role in shaping the built environment over centuries. This research aims to explore the effective utilization of metal craft techniques in retail spaces located within heritage buildings. The focus of the research is specifically on the application of metal craft techniques in facades and railings of retail stores such as upmarket, specialty, and department stores. The study will involve an analysis of the evolution of metal craft techniques, followed by an examination of various types of metal craft techniques commonly used in retail facades and railings. The study will include examples of metal forging, casting, and finishing techniques. This will be done by decoding the application of metal in selected case studies. The case studies will be limited to interior projects built within heritage buildings and will be examined solely based on the use of metal craft techniques in facades and railings. By probing how effectively metal has been used in the cases, this study will specifically hope to indicate the impact and importance of metal craft techniques in retail store design and heritage building preservation. Additionally, the research will identify the future scope for the application of metal in retail store design, as well as potential avenues for further research.
