The peripheral areas in Ujjain are unattended when it comes to access to basic sanitation services. Residential areas, agriculture lands, and many small-scale informal industries operate in these areas which are not connected to the city’s sewerage network. The batik printing community is one such area where no major interventions in improving sanitation or wastewater management are proposed. Chemical effluents are mixed with domestic sewage which is directly discharged into the river causing pollution of water bodies and public health issues. The success of such an intervention can be easily scaled across all such peripheral areas with similar characteristics.
