Electrical Waste Recyclers of Downstream Ship Breaking Industry in Bhavnagar,

Self Employed Women’s Association, a central trade union, is organizing women workers since 1972 with the twin goals of full employment and self-reliance and has a member base of 2.1 million in 18 States of Inda.
Bhavnagar Gujarat sports one of the biggest ship breaking yard in India. SEWA is organizing women workers involved in organizing women workers of down stream ship breaking industry since 1972.
These women workers are involved in the work related to ship breaking like recycling the anchor ropes and electrical waste. Their socio- economic condition is poor and working condition adverse. They cut the anchor ropes in the primitive condition, segregate the strands by colors, wash it in primitive washing machine, dry it and sell it thus earning income for themselves.
The women workers buy the electrical waste of the ships in bulk. They extract precious metal by breaking and incinerating it and sell the precious metal thus extracted to scrap shop thus earning income
