Towards automation in 5s – Lean Tool: Classification of Images from Construction Sites
5s is one of the most popular lean tools adopted in construction projects. The popularity of its tool lies in the visual management, which provides clear indication to the site personnel for areas of improvement as well sustaining it. Often, a site personnel who is aware of 5s tool inspects the site and provides the suggestions for improvements. Many a time the site photographs are taken and these photographs are discussed in the meetings for areas of improvement. These improvements fall under categories such as sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain. With the advent of image processing, supported by machine learning, this process of suggesting improvement for few of categories like sort, set in order and shine can be automated.
