Fragments : Architecture and the Unfinished

The ideal of wholeness and finality that we associate with the aspirations of architects in both contemporary as well as since antiquity is a matter of debate from the Renaissance onwards. This was shattered both deliberately and inevitably in the modern era. The underlying theme of this studio is fragmentation in architecture from the 18th C to now.

We will offer each student their own belief and perception in individual scholarly ‘fragments’, they would approach the chosen design project, the topic that resonates with an inherent theme in architecture. Each unique architect of the age, personal and professional interests have deliberately addressed the same and with varying intentions.

The range of subject matter embraces the architectural effects and philosophical implications of fragmentation, examinations of the antiquity found in RUINS by the Renaissance and then are discovered ( measured drawings and re-construction) during the Neo-Classical age that was embraced by all modern and now contemporary architects. Twentieth century explores aspects of modernist architecture by Erno Goldfinger and the work of several masters of the poetic fragment – Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa, Louis Kahn, Frank Gehry. Studio shall delve into modernist
concepts such as Cubism, and works of many architects and artists.
