Formulating Forms

With great emphasis on ‘doing and seeing’, the discovery of form took place by learning ‘how to see’. On viewing the form as a unified entity, the process of design was heavily relying on visual decision making while being conscious of the collective perception of the form. Several elements stand out as key factors which play an important role while approaching form generation. These include- perception, light and shadow, material, proportion and scale, mental correlation, instinct and communication. The objective was to create purposeful product form which seems instinctively appealing.

A perfect gap between the two shapes was to be discovered- this would allow the shapes to be perceived as a whole but also as separate entities. The effect of manipulating the radii was observed.

The epiphany of the sheer amount of possibilities was revealed in this exercise. This involved exploring forms made out of a single a4 sheet and just one fold.

Learning 'how to see' was an integral lesson as the natural object was drawn to be understood. What parts of its form makes its identity was found out through the reduction method.

The form of the materials itself gave way to abstractions of okra. Some worked with the correlation to okra while others were far off. The jewellery is a statement piece which heavily relies on the material's form for structure.

'Bold' was to be expressed through a cuboidal form which could only have the edges manipulated ( fillet or chamfer), without losing it's cuboidal properties. Creating drama with light and shadow was my main aim while trying to express bold qualities in the form. (Exploration- thermocol ; Final- POP)

A Cone and a Triangular Prism were to be joined through a transition which was instantaneously appealing. (Exploration- thermocol ; Final- POP)

The main objective of this exercise was to give into human instincts to guide movement. A combination of movements- 'Push and Slide' were to be communicated by just the form.

The brief involved form finding for an 'Iced Tea Machine'. This must capture the essence of the beverage while still holding onto a sense of a machine. The process began with trying to gather visual and written content which expressed the feeling of the beverage accurately.

After ideation, model making using thermocol took place where ideas were rejected or taken forward. 'Splashes' and 'Refreshment' were the feelings trying to be captured in the form.

The final POP form of the Iced Tea Machine has a strong curve with a dynamic movement attached to it. An attempt to retain the 'representation' of a machine was made while still capturing the essence of Iced Tea.
