Creating good form is integral to the practice of design. One can argue that form is design.
While interpretation of form may be subjective; Creation of form in Design, with constraints of function, material, internals, context etc. is facilitated with structured training to see and do form.
Starting with becoming aware of how we perceive form, students will go through basic assignments including radii manipulation and form transition (~2 weeks). These are crash assignments and will be the basis for further learning. The coursework will seek to understand relationship between form and material/process (~3 weeks), form and nature (~3 weeks), form and communication (~4 weeks), form and expression (~4 weeks). Stress will be on process of visualising / generating, refining, and bringing forth the strength of form. Hands-on exploration will develop skills in various materials including wire, foil, plaster, thermocol etc.
With practical exploration, clear visualisation, realisation and representation, coursework will be structured to create meaningful form for products.
At the end of the studio students would have developed a vocabulary to speak about form and a robust approach to creating new, interesting, relevant form for their projects and gain confidence in their creations.
