Shifting Grounds - A Metamorphosis in Space

The stage is designed for ‘Metamorphosis’ by Kafka and reflects the text’s themes of transformation, disorientation, and the shifting boundaries between personal and collective space. The design aims to create a system of multiple scene spaces that are intentionally created for the text but can be altered to create new spaces within the framework of the system. The room, initially a static family space, undergoes an evolution throughout the play, visually representing the protagonist Gregor Samsa’s transformation and the family’s reaction to it. This is exaggerated through a play in scales, depth, and proportion. A central void anchors the space, allowing visual connections while preventing apparent physical connections at the front, reinforcing the emotional isolation of the character. Principles and proportions from the Jami Masjid, Champaner are adapted within the scaffold to amplify the sense of displacement in space and time.
