Layers of time - Unearthing the Threads of History

Located in the walled city of Ahmedabad, founded by Sultan Ahmad Shah in the 15th century, on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati River, Sardar Bagh presents a rich architectural heritage from the Sultanate period.  In the 16th Century, the Royal Maidan was situated on the park's current land. An expanding city fabric meant that this land, in the 1900’s, got consumed for other uses, and the development of public amenities - including a bus terminal, and other public buildings. This led to a reduction of this nearly 46.3 acres of land to approximately 5 acres. This project envisions a landscape design that breathes new life into a site rich in heritage, cultural significance, and ecological value. The design draws inspiration from the “genius loci” (spirit of the place) and uses a radiating concept to represent the site’s historical evolution.  The site is seen as a confluence of cultures, of history and of ecology. Senses are heightened and observations are made with respect to tangible & intangible elements so that the visitors acknowledge the presence of the intimately woven landscapes within the city.
