Chronotopes of Faith: Design of a Sacred Landscape

The project 'Chronotopes of Faith' creates a landscape that reconnects visitors with the sacred and surroundings of the temple complex.

This aids in the development of a language as a pattern for design, with its own grammar of space and connotations for making it a symbolic analogy embedded in spatial findings. This landscape pattern is designed to relate us to the environment through new metaphors presented to the senses.

In closing, the project reimagines itself as a site for contemplation and speculation while connecting to the wider rhythms, ecological networks, or the even more abstract forces that create our world.

Series of impressions / expressions as drawings to develop a spatial palette and framework

Siting the Project | The selected site of the temple complex in Koteshwar, Ahmedabad is placed in conjunction of a developing precinct with layers of dense forest land and Sabarmati river

Alteration 01 | Based on the understanding of site and context by introducing the notion of a water feature as a ‘reading line’ that establishes a seamless connection between the river and the temple

Alteration 02 | Based on the philosophy & ideas of Charles Jencks using concepts of iconography, the abstraction of form, and the bold use of landforms within the surrounding landscape

Alteration 3 | Based on a translation of response from narrative about tactility and textures

Synthesis | Development of a masterplan integrating concepts of water interaction, journey, axial experiences, and spatial manifestations of faith-based architecture

Shaping Spaces | Sections outlining the program and its response to spatial parameters of design

The model shows the spatial character through a sequence of enclosures, materiality and overall planting strategy

Planting Strategy & Grouping | Overall classification of plant typologies and specific demonstrations

Technical Strategies | Lighting Strategy and Irrigation Strategy
