Natyaashraya -Threshold of Expression

Set within the historic precincts of Darpana Academy and Natrani Amphitheatre in Ahmedabad, Natya?shraya is envisioned as an architectural extension and transformation — a sanctuary for performance where movement, memory, and space come together. Rather than following the academy’s existing spatial order, the new intervention shifts the dominant axis, introducing a deliberate geometric departure that creates tension and dialogue between the original and the new. This shift generates layered volumes, spatial pauses, and performative thresholds — evoking the rhythm of rehearsal, improvisation, and stagecraft. The juxtaposition of built forms becomes a choreography in itself, allowing architecture to act as both frame and performer. Geometry here is not static; it initiates a conversation between tradition and innovation, between the body and space. As an extension of Darpana, Natya?shraya becomes a living ?shraya — a refuge for expressive movement, a hub for evolving performance, and a site where the architecture embodies the spirit of transformation.
