Carbon Credits Via Solid Waste Management

This project explores how Surat’s solid waste management system can benefit from carbon credit mechanisms to improve both climate impact and financial sustainability. A practical emissions estimation toolkit and a detailed institutional mapping were developed to support accurate carbon accounting and clear roles for governance. Using IPCC methods, the study compares a business-as-usual scenario with a carbon credit pilot. With an investment of Rs.60 crore, the pilot is expected to earn Rs.180.5 crore by 2047. By 2041, pilot revenues almost double those of the baseline, showing how cities can use carbon markets to build greener and more resilient infrastructure.
