Design of Long Span Complex Structures

The recent development of computational tools has enabled the design and analysis of complex long span structures. Long span structures are typically designed considering the global stiffness of the structure as a whole and not just the stiffness of individual members. The structural design of long-span structures tends to involve the optimization of multiple structural elements, which work as an entire system to withstand various kinds of forces. During this process, it becomes imperative to change the size and the position of the structural elements without changing the relationship between them to withstand critical forces arising from various load combinations. The studio intends to explore the potential of computational tools to stabilize, design and optimize the structural system of long span structures. It also intends to understand the relation between structural system and material properties. Studio output will be in the form of design model, detailed design calculation report and detailed drawings.
