Greening Greys

The quality of life in urban areas is declining in cities like Ahmedabad that are heating up faster than surrounding areas, air quality is worsening, and public spaces are becoming increasingly lifeless. These environmental stresses aren’t abstract, they show up in our lungs, moods, and shrinking access to safe, breathable, liveable space. Greening isn’t just aesthetic but about cooling cities, cleaning air, restoring biodiversity, and creating environments that care for us. In a city facing heat, pollution, and disconnection, the need is not just relevant, ‘it’s urgent’.
Overall, this course has helped me develop soft skills essential to becoming an ethical designer. I’ve learned to view systems holistically, understanding how individual components interact with the whole. I now approach design by balancing convenience, cost, equity, and environmental impact to serve the larger good. Moreover, the course instilled the importance of co-creation: engaging directly with users to design with them rather than for them. Most importantly, I’ve also learned to strategically identify where, how, and at what level to intervene for maximum impact.
