TA: Janki Vaishnav_VFPeople, Buildings, Cities : Reimagining the Social Life of Housing in India
In today’s context, there is a conflict between the production of lived, social space and economy
generating housing development, land speculation and real estate driven building regulation. This
often creates an inhuman city which is just a collection of objects. Therefore,
studio addresses the making of housing through two tangents –
a. An exploration of the concepts of community, social spaces and local identities in housing
The studio explores negotiating the market requirements of density and efficiency in the design
process - arguing that an efficient building still has the capacity to provide for the social spaces and
community-driven design that one would aspire for in the housing typology.
b. A post design investigation into the role that building codes play in shaping buildings and cities
While architects are trained to design the built environment with a sense of well-being at its core, the complexity of building regulations act as hindrance to these core principles, more often than not, housing projects in urban centers. This studio wishes to investigate this relation between building regulations, housing design, and social life in Indian cities. In doing so the studio asks the question, what is a good building regulation for better living in urban centers?
