In the time of climate change and rapid urbanisation the studio explores an approach to urban landscape design: one that is active and productive rather than ornamental and resource intensive.
The studio will take decadent and challenging urban spatialities, aiming to establish productive landscape systems. The studio strategy prioritises leveraging natural processes to develop resilient ecosystems suited to the local climate, habitat, and biodiversity and at the same time. Simultaneously, it emphasises a harmonious integration with existing land forms, advocating for minimal artificial interventions, all the while crafting appealing and functional social public spaces.
The studio will include lectures, workshops and tutorials on native flora and fauna, landscape aesthetics, ecosystem services and seasonal landscape change. Students will create lively, joyful and productive spaces communicated through sketches, renderings and models.
Through this studio, students will learn about design of public spaces with a focus on leading contemporary thinking about sustainable landscape design practice with a strong focus on regenerative nature based solutions.
