The focus of the studio is on the detailed design of interior spaces & elements framed by positions & practices in conservation & reuse while understanding decisions required in creating interventions within an existing built structure. The studio explores the notion of sociocultural context while developing an appreciation for the built fabric with heritage values. The core of the studio dwells into creating meaning of place, sensitive to its earlier roots while superimposing a new function with respect to user experience.
The initial weeks of studio focus on introducing & sensitizing students about the meaning of adaptive reuse through case studies & specific research exercises (including sociocultural & contextual aspects of adaptive reuse). Students will then explore in-depth reasons & attitudes revolving around functions, space planning, user experience, materials and material use, using case studies & models to explain interventions & inferences. Simultaneously, students will identify and explore the various aspects of hospitality industry, the intricacies of programming & planning a hotel as well as other areas within the hospitality industry.
In the final project, students will create a design for a hospitality program of their selection, on a given heritage site.
