Speculative Archi-scapes. Tailoring Built Environments in Imagined Worlds

In this unit, students developed creative thinking and narrative integration through the use of digital mediums as thinking tools, while crafting architectural spaces for a provided fictional narrative. The primary focus was to conceive and actualize both solitary and communal interventions that aligned with the narrative intricacies of the decoded fictional universe. The studio process derived relevant architectural guidelines tailored to specific species and contextual factors such as geology, social structure, technology, and material sciences.
Students explored beyond the familiar boundaries of what they had experienced as architecture and reimagined spatial configuration with clarity of narrative influences. They viewed the design challenges of the fictional world as opportunities for creative investigation. In this multidisciplinary collaboration, students decoded the narrative and translated it into a cohesive built environment; generating and integrating their individual interpretations into vivid 3D illustrations. The design strategies created transcended mere narrative backdrops, becoming integral story elements that contributed to a curated immersive spatial experience. Students enhanced their systems thinking and radical imagination through a speculative design approach. Additionally, they innovated representation language to explicitly communicate.
