Contextualising Interior Space Making

Interior Architecture Hospitality Design informed by the local context
Architecture, can be considered to be a result of an appropriate response to the context which can be summarised as ‘Form Follows Context’. The studio will explore the interface between interior architecture and its ‘context’ in hospitality design. Design of hotels showcasing the context would enrich the experience for the visitor, while boosting the local economy and preserving the culture.
Hospitality design that references the local context has always existed but, a new genre was created when architects like Geoffrey Bawa and Kerry Hill designed hotels in South East Asia. The endeavour of this studio will be to ask how can architecture help make a visit memorable? For their final outcome, students will be asked to design the interior of designated areas of a hotel and to present their design in the form of 3D rendered images.

Studio Unit

E1: To delve into researching context-based hospitality spaces, employing a structured method of analysis that encompasses various layers such as Form, Furniture, Finishes, Furnishings, and Accessories. The primary goal of this exercise was: to set base for an analytical methodology for future application within the studio.

E2: A week-long site visit intending to examine both the physical and socio-cultural dimensions of the site's location. To facilitate this, the SENSITIZE is introduced in two phases. Initially, students 'Understand Context' by analyzing it across different scales, progressing from the Global onto the Regional, Local and finally the Immediate and Site Context. Following this, and during the site visit, to fully engage with the essence of a locality, a comprehensive exploration of its diverse elements is carried out through 'Cultural Immersion' by observing Phenomenon and extracting associated Objects or vice versa.

E3: In order to substantiate the process of formulating concepts for translating into the design, this stage aims to expand the spectrum of inquiries and understand the quality of spaces, materialized through abstract models. As tangible outcomes other than models the aim is to refine the process through study diagrams and FORMALIZE intents by deriving a brief note of up to 200 words as a summary of the same. The last stage, STRATEGIZE aims to derive strategies to aid in translation of concept on site and develop methodology to carry out the process.

E4: To employ the methods and strategies formulated to design four primary hospitality spaces: Reception and Waiting, Restaurant & Bar, Spa & Wellness, and Rooms.

E5: To devise representation strategies and produce coherent presentations of the designs, ensuring a comprehensive articulation of their design concepts.
