The Development Plan Studio for Ahmedabad focuses on preparing a comprehensive and implementable Development Plan (DP) for the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, in accordance with the statutory provisions of the Gujarat Town Planning & Urban Development Act, 1976. While DPs are key instruments of planning, they have traditionally emphasized control over facilitation, often becoming static exercises that inadequately integrate land use, transport, affordable housing, infrastructure, and environmental concerns.This studio challenges students to reimagine the Development Plan as a dynamic and enabling framework?one that promotes compact, optimized horizontal and vertical growth, integrates Transit-Oriented Development principles, and prepares Ahmedabad and its growth centers to leverage upcoming transformations such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, and the potential opportunities of hosting global events like the Olympics. It aspires to create a livable and breathable city that celebrates its public assets?markets, open spaces, water bodies, and sports facilities?while ensuring that affordable housing, infrastructure, and mobility are planned in a holistic and inclusive manner.The studio aligns itself with the broader national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, using the 100th year of India?s independence as a temporal marker to frame long-term thinking around sustainability, equity, and resilience. Through the semester, students examine national and international precedents and apply innovative strategies in zoning, form-based regulations, transportation planning, and regulatory frameworks that support Blue-Green Infrastructure, heritage and ecological conservation, and climate-sensitive urbanism. The emphasis is on developing tools and proposals that are not only visionary but implementable to make Ahmedabad future ready.
