About the studio: A Statutory Development Plan is a critical tool for planning and managing urban areas and their peripheries. Conventionally, these plans have often emphasized on control over facilitating the development. Also, the towns have failed to effectively integrate land use and transportation, infrastructure provision, and environmental sustainability, which eventually make the whole process a mere mapping exercise.
This studio challenges students to move beyond the conventional ?predict and provide? approach. Through national and international case studies, they explore innovative tools and concepts of planning, zoning, and regulatory frameworks. Through the iterative process during the 4 quarters of the semester, they are facilitated to prepare a more robust, enabling, sustainable, and implementable Development Plan. By the semester?s end, students have developed a comprehensive Development Plan and broad Development Facilitating Regulations keeping robustness with adaptability and implementability at the core.
