This studio unit intends to investigate into undefined#39;processesundefined#39; in architectural design activity.
First half of the studio, titled as ‘abstraction’, will involve developing abstract ideas from a ‘topic’ carefully selected by the student. The ‘topic’ could be an object, a process or an activity occurring in nature that has a fascinating play of forces. The ‘abstraction’ stage will come to conclusion with the introduction of site and program, wherein students will suggest the architectural form for the program with the help of derived models from ‘abstraction’ stage.
The second half, titled as ‘tectonics’, will focus on developing structural system, construction materials, and technology appropriate for the architectural form derived at end of last stage.
Studio Unit
Abstraction 2D:Each student chose a subject (topic) from nature as a starting point for their design process.
Students used secondary sources to observe the 'subject', looking for the 'obvious' and 'beyond
obvious', and then representing their observations with 2D diagrams. Abstraction 3D:Selected 2D diagrams were reinterpreted and transformed into 3D diagrams using diverse
mediums / model-making techniques.
After the ‘Abstraction’ stage was complete, the site was introduced.
On the provided site, various application scenarios for the 3D abstraction models as
programmatic interventions—such as a bridge, pavilion, cantilevered deck, or watch tower—were
tested using digital and physical models.
Tectonics (Structure):
Appropriate structural system was developed by considering form, context and desired materials
with the help of digital and physical models.
The final forms were generated after carefully resolving the structural system with its junction
details.
