Elements of Urban Design Studio

The studio is structured as an introduction to urban elements and design of urban public spaces. The studio is based on a premise that urban design is best understood and expressed through study and analysis of the various elements of built urban environment. This studio allows students to understand the scale, form and character of key urban design elements and their relationship with the larger urban context.

The studio is structured in two modules, across 16 weeks of the semester.

Module 1: Streets and Building Types
This module involves a case study of a street to understand the various components that shape its character. Building on these learnings, students reimagine existing streets from a fresh perspective.

Module 2: Urban Block and Public Space Design
This module focuses on developing a strategy to enhance the quality of life within urban blocks. It further explores the detailed design of selected public spaces, with attention to materials, lighting, street furniture, and other key design elements.
