TA: Shruti JogReimagining Public Spaces in Historic Precincts
India has made significant progress in sustainable urban design and governance through the implementation of initiatives like the JnNURM Launched in 2005, JnNURM sought to modernize urban infrastructure, enhance governance, and promote planned urban growth in response to rapid urbanization.
Primary focus was on urban renewal and infrastructure development, the mission also emphasized the importance of preserving and revitalizing heritage areas and precincts as a key component of urban sustainability. This dual focus on modernization and heritage conservation reflects India''s understanding that sustainable development is not only about building for the future but also about safeguarding the past.
This design studio focuses on reimagining public spaces within a heritage precinct through a collaborative and comprehensive approach. It challenges students to rethink the role of public spaces within the context of a heritage site, blending modern needs with the preservation of historical and cultural identities. By delving into the historical, cultural, and ecological dimensions of the site.
Students aim to design public spaces that conserve the heritage while responding to contemporary urban demands. This holistic design process not only looks at physical space but also considers the social, cultural, and environmental factors that define the identity of the precinct.
